Maris, Rod and Family,
Two memories of your mother capture so much.
Cruising on the Lord Jeff down Long Island Sound many summers ago, Joan spent her free time addressing letters that were part of Friends of the Bay’s first contribution solicitation. Every time the breeze picked up, the rest of us madly tried to catch as many letters and envelops as possible.
Every time I drive off Centre Island, I thank Joan for her successful one-woman campaign the keep the County from extending the steel fence blocking the view of the Sound from extending the last 200 yards to the Village entrance.
Always so warm and welcoming, she was such a wonderful friend. Julia and I so miss her.
I still have magical memories of my visits with Aunt Joanie, Uncle Jack, Rod and Maris, and our stays in Manhattan and Oyser Bay. From my childhood view, Joanie seemed so colorful and central to life at the Williams’. Somehow she conveyed to me a sense of beauty, peace and justice that remains a part of my would view still today.
